Sex as Sacred Union

In a Venn diagram of people in theater, kinksters, and poly folk, there's considerable overlap. I'm not sure if it's as remarkable as the geeky vs. kinky graph, but it's close. Something about subcultures and niche social groups and other-than-mainstream beliefs, probably. Or that it's a self-perpetuating feedback loop of friends having interests spreading to friends, etc etc.

Regardless of why, I've got a fellow stage manager friend, who's also poly, and we bumped into each other the other night. As expected, it was late at night, in a mostly empty theater. She was doing paperwork after a rehearsal, I was helping a friend tape out a floor (for those of you not in theater, taping out a floor is when you mark out the set, in tape, in the rehearsal space, so the actors can practice on it. It's actually one of my favorite bits of stage management). We were all tired and a little fried, but again, as expected, got to talking. In this business, with it's strange hours and ridiculous time commitments and insular subject matter, we all take the social time where we can get it, which mostly means theater people are friends with other theater people

She got to talking about a lover of hers (her word, not mine; "lover," always ends up sounding too much like shag carpet and shiny shirts with gold chains, to me) who, after much discussion, she'd finally found a balance with. He wasn't interested much in her theater friends, or that community, and she wasn't much interested in his kinky proclivities. But they'd found a happy medium, a good level of investment and commitment for both of them, and she felt like they were, after a year, finally hitting a happy pace and frequency for each other. Especially considering how into the kink scene he'd gotten lately, she said, which just wasn't her thing.

"Yeah, whips and chains and pain, it's not for me. I'm about sex as sacred union, and if that's not you, then no thank you."

And I'm sure she didn't mean it as anything, because for her, kinky sex obviously can't be sacred, or deep, or... whatever it is that she needs sex to be. But it was interesting, hearing those words come out of her mouth, how much it stung. As usual, the sting got me thinking, and as usual, I have thoughts from that thinking.

Much of the world, it seems, especially with the recent media frenzy around That Book That Shall Not Be Named, has become aware of the kink in a way they weren't before. And sure, there are all kinds of ways this perspective (the perspective that's offered by the media, that's offered by The Book, that most of people, when I talk to them, have about kink) is pretty screwed up. But this friend of mine, a woman I know and like and who's sex positive and open and loving, she doesn't really fit into that category. She knows more, and doesn't, from what I can tell, have these biases. She's not a person I would peg (punny, punny) to assume much, if anything, about other people's sex lives. So it was surprising to me, and enlightening, to see this tiny piece of the perspective on kink that, regardless of where you get your representations of kink from, or sex positive or poly you are, might be much more prevalent than I realized.

Different than the idea that being kinky is deviant, or a sickness, or exists only in the sex industry, or is something that dirty, fringe people do in dark hotel rooms, there's this idea that kinky sex is funny, or silly, or, in some fashion, trivial. That it doesn't run as deep as sex without pain, without overt power exchange, without role playing or costumes or implements.

That kinky sex is, inherently, less than non-kinky sex.

This might not be a revelation to many people, but it was for me. I thought back on conversations I've had with friends and acquaintances, and started to wonder what kind of weight they gave the words I use, how the meaning behind those words and ideas shifted from the moment they came out of my mouth, to the moment they landed in the brains of those friends. Do they imagine it as a game? As goofy? As trivial or, worse still, as just a mechanism by which I get turned on, as a tool by which I get to the actual, meaningful part: the sex?

Taking kink too seriously has it's own issues, and I'm not trying to advocate that kink = meaning any more so than any "non-kinky" sex must be imbued with meaning. That's entirely up to the practitioners of that given sex, at that given instance of sex. One of my favorite blogs is Happy BDSM, and it serves as a delightful reminder that this is fun, that this is play, that joy comes in smiles and laughter as much with BDSM as without.

The other side of that coin, though, is this reaction I'm having to my friend's comment, the thing that I think so many people don't understand about kink, or don't maybe better said: the thing that they don't even think to consider. That yes, the joy comes with D/s, with role play and bondage, but that it comes because of it as well.

The moment of obeying a command, the seconds between hearing it out of Jamie's mouth and fulfilling the action, the frantic, visceral, immediate compliance: this is sacred to me. The warmth that spreads from my face to my shoulders to the very edges of my skin when I know I've done what's been asked, when I know he's happy with me, proud of me, when I know I've been good, really good, whatever I've overcome to get there: that is sacred to me. The sound of a cane through the air; the sharp shock of as it flicks across my ass, upturned in the air, although it's frightening, difficult, shameful for me to keep there, but he wants me to keep it there, so I do; the pain changing in the seconds after the strike, spreading, ebbing from sting to pressure to a sweet and steady burn; the residual warmth of the line as he winds up for another, and another, layered in succession until I'm screaming: this is sacred to me. Running the tips of my fingers up to my neck, feeling the wide band of black leather there, knowing that it is only a thing, but my, what meaning we have put in it, what incredible heights such a simple, ritual object can carry us to: this is sacred to me.

So yes, kink is sometimes silly: sex, in any of it's permutations, should be able to be silly. But frivolous? Or employed for some other, better purpose, by definition? Or lesser in some way than other kinds of sex? No way.

because isn't that the face of the radically ecstatic?

And I know that most people reading this are with me on it; I know I'm not trying to convince anyone otherwise, really. But I think a lot of my passion about this comes from how incredible it's been for me to discover this; how basically excellent it's been to find. I'm invested and passionate about this part of myself. Wanting to scream from the rooftops: "Look! Yes! Look! This is how I am! I've found what I want and I get to have it! Isn't it amazing? Isn't it just fucking unbelievable?"

A few dictionary definitions of scared pretty much sum it up: "dedicated to some person, purpose, or object; regarded with reverence." In those moments, I revere him; there isn't a better word. I am dedicated; I am a dedication, dripping wet, prostrate, ass welted and panting through open lips. This is my church; this is one of the ways I find myself most joyous in the world.

So yes, Sir, yes Sir this is my sacred union. This is the way I butter my bread. And not as an appetizer, not simply to fill my stomach, but because this bread and this butter are my first choice.

Do As Your Told

So, this was supposed to be up a while ago, but what with the crazy that the last few weeks have been, it's taken a while to get it to a (semi-reasonably) readable place.

Also, the problem with writing porn is... well, it's porn. I end up quitting halfway through, masturbating, and losing interest.

It's a slow editing process.

Without further adieu: the first installation of totally-no-risk-herpes-inspired-porn!

*

We're riding home in the truck. I'm sitting on the bench seat, heels on the dashboard, body jackknifed and bare legs catching streetlights as we pass them. My skirt slips slowly up my thighs with each turn, each acceleration, higher by the inches, by the minutes. He can see the tops of the stockings, black lace. They pinch just a little, a good pinch, a reminder every time I move that I'm wearing them, and nothing else, underneath.

He looks over, making a point of it. I notice that he's noticed. He takes a turn down a street not ours, not so far away, but not the way home either. My breath catches in my throat, and he pulls over, parks the truck under a low tree, leaves heavy in the rain. The drip over the windsheild, shadows from the steetlight down the block. Just enough for us to see each other. The windows fog.

"Take off your coat." He says.
"What are..."
"I said, take off your coat." He cracks the window, just an inch, lights a cigarette, raises his eyebrows at me and stares. He does this when he's waiting, and I know that, and still, it takes me a second to understand.
I shimmy out of the coat, draping it over the seat behind me. We've had the heat on, so it's warm, but the air drafts through the window. I shiver a little.
He reaches out, touches my face, cupping it, like I'm something precious. His hands drift back towards my hair, fingers finding the curls at the bottom of my neck, rooting and pulling, not gently, enough to hurt. My breath comes fast.

He pulls me up, and I'm kneeling in the middle of the seat, facing him, leaf shadows across my eyes, the world in shadow and then light and then shadow. He sit forward still, looking over whenever he cares to, and taps the cigarettes out the window, hot breath and smoke fogging the glass.

Facing him, I wait, a prize on a shelf, almost ignored. An item of service, something utilitarian, and it's the most delicious kind of uncomfortable.

"Undo your buttons. All of them."

My head bent back, neck exposed as prey for the biting, I hold the back of the seat with one hand, and clumsy, shaking, pop the snaps on my blouse with the other. It hangs, open, white skin underneath. My chest rises and falls, pushing the goose pimpled skin over the edge my bra, swelling, warm against the cold air up and over the cups, and receding on the exhale.

"Very good. That's a very good girl." He says it carefully, quietly. There's not rush, and no urgency, but a calculation, because that's what it is. He knows exactly what that will do, electric down the length of me, just a word, just a phrase, but it's magnetic, good medicine.

"Yes Sir."

He lets go of my hair, tossing my head to the side. I'm not to move unless he says so; this is something we've discussed, at length, beforehand. This is something I know, and it's a test, every passing moment, a task evident in stillness, proved by the absence of evidence, nothing shifting that he can see, but I'm getting wetter by the second. My breath gets quieter, shallower, concentrating, the very concentration it requires building an ever-distracting heat between my legs.

"It's a very nice skirt you have on, there."
"Thank you Sir."
"And very nice stockings." He's running a hand gently over my knee.
"Yes Sir."
"Did you pick those out yourself?"
I hesitate, as if one answer or another would change what happens next.
"Yes."
A quick slap across the face, before I can think, it catches my cheek in a hot sting and I'm looking suddenly out the window.
"Yes what?"
A stupid mistake.
"Yes Sir. Sir yes Sir."
"That's right."

He trails his fingers over my thighs, nudges them apart, ever so slightly, with gentle taps on the inside, like training an animal, teaching an innocent. I move them in increments, one towards the back of the seat, one towards the edge. The grey wool skirt hangs in the middle, whole inches of modesty.
"Oh that's a very good girl." He reaches up, pushes the blouse back from my shoulders. His fingers run the down my front, and I breathe and rise to meet him as he presses a flat hand between my breasts, reaching to pull the cups down and my nipples up, resting them on the folds of the bra, displayed. They pucker in the draft, and I shiver.

"Are you cold?"
"A little Sir."
He slaps me lightly again, across the jaw.
"Good." He says, cupping my face.

He sits back for a moment, not touching me. He tosses the cigarette out the window, and exhales long smoke. He stares, looking up and down, considering, a puzzle to solve.

"Pull it up."
"What?"
"Pull up your skirt. Show me."

I reach down, and push the hem neatly up, bunching it along the tops of my thighs. The stockings end, bare leg above them, bare between them, and looking down at myself it is stockings and then nothing, my thighs and lips in the open air. He pushes a strand of hair back from my face, and his other hand, I notice, lays between his legs, stroking gently up and down.

"Are you wet?"
"Yes Sir."
"And would you like to do something about that?"
"Yes Sir." I say. I'm trembling.
"Are you worried someone will see?" He asks, as if he could know that, as if he's aware of how hard it is not to look behind, not to look at the windshield, not the check how covered we are by the tree or how much light, exactly, mists in from the outside.
"Yes Sir."
"Good. Touch yourself."

A hand, tentative, I press up my thigh, between my legs, pushing the skirt up and out of the way, full view now. It's hot and wet, almost dripping to the seat below. The palms of my finger tips find an easy rythym, pressing in between my lips and to either side of my clit, slipping slowly, at first, and then faster. I let out a breath, and bit my mouth to keep from smiling.
"Oh that's such a good girl. Such a good girl." His hand is moving fast too now, over his jeans.

He unzips his jeans, pulling himself out. I keep my eyes down, as instructed, but I know that he's looking, watching my fingers flicking between my legs, tits heaving up and down as I start to grind with my hips, nipples tight and peaked with the cold. I keep my eyes down, no eye contact, I know this, and watch his grip on his dick get tighter, the rhythm get faster, pulsing blood under the skin. I want to climb on top of him and ride it, can feel the head of him pressing into me, slipping into me, can feel the warm inside skin of my thighs rubbing on his jeans, can feel the rhythm of me, filthy, desperate, right there in the car.

But he slows, just then, and lifts my chin with his other hand, looking me in the face.

"Would you like to taste it?"
I nod, mouth already open.
"And what do you do when you want something?"
"I..."
"You know the answer. It's okay." He's almost gentle.
"I ask for it, Sir."
"That's right."
"May I... May I suck your cock please, Sir?" And even as the words are out of my mouth, I can taste it on my tongue, feel it hard and pulsing against the insides of my cheeks.

"Very good. Go ahead."

He lets go, and his dick stands up straight from his jeans, hard and pink. I lower myself down, pausing my hand on myself to adjust. He taps me light on the ass.

"Did I tell you to stop?"
"No Sir."
"Good. Now taste it."

I kiss him up and down the shaft, thin skin over the swell. My lips run up and down the sides, to the top. I open my mouth and lower, slowly. Like a favorite food I haven't ever tasted before, the moment of satisfaction when I take him in, and I'm full, I'm full of him.

He rests a hand across my back, fingers trailing lightly over my ass, which is up in the air, my hand still going fast between my legs. I suck, running my tongue along the ridge of the head, rising and then pushing back down, building a rhythm. My clit is on fire, and I flick faster, in time with my own sucking, and every stroke is hot and biting and any minute, any damn minute, it'll fall over the edge. His searches with his other hand, finding a cigarette and a lighter, smoking again out the open window as I work his dick deeper and deeper down my throat.

"Good girl. Deeper now." His voice is gentle, patient, instructional, his hand running slowly past my lower back, patting my ass, slapping a little, finger pressing gently between the cheeks and against the outside of the pucker there.

I suck harder, push the head of him against the back of my mouth, into my throat, gagging and spitting, coughing as I come up, gasping for breath and then down again, a little push to get to the base, his balls pressing into my cheek.

"Oh, that's my girl." He sighs, takes his finger away, and grabs a handful of my ass cheek, holding on, dragging from his cigarette with the other hand.

"That' my very, very good girl." His voice begins to falter, just a little, the pleasure in his body a waver in the measured tone. He starts thrusting back, and I can barely breath, and between my legs there's a clenching starting, the beginning of a fall. He flicks the cigarette out the window and puts a hand on my head, pulsing my whole body up and down over him.

"Oh yes good girl. You like that, don't you? You like my cock down your throat?" I can't answer, but he knows that.

"Good slut... That's a very... very good little... slut." It's real praise, heightened, his voice a little higher, but he means it.
"You take that cock. That's... that's my good..." Hands wrapped in my hair, he holds my head down, a pulsed throbbing in my mouth, shooting striaght down the back of my throat, hot and salty, so far back I can barely taste it.

He pauses a moment, lets out a breath. He lifts my head from his lap. I'm still slick against myself, still going, so close to coming but knowing that I need permission.

"May I, Sir?"

I'm kneeling, desperate, flushed, still facing him, a drip of his come across my chin. He looks me up and down, tucks his cock back in his pants. He run a finger over my chin, wiping the drip, holding the finger out for me.

"No." He says. I lean forward, licking it from his fingertip, "You may not. Buckle up."

He pushes me gently, almost playful, back to the passengers side, and my legs are shaking and my pussy is throbbing and my fingers fall, wet and still, to clench in my skirt.

"You wait until we get home." He says.

And he buckles, and puts the key in the ignition, and turns it, and the engine roars us home.

The Hook and the Line (more porny porn)

There's a lot of talk around the kinky communities about how FSOG sucks. And I agree; it totally does. But instead of nattering about it, I'm trying my hand at some better, healthier erotica, negotiation and aftercare included. I'm not sure if this is porn, a short story, or what. Knowing how I usually roll, it's probably somewhere in between.

And with that, enjoy!

The Hook and the Line

This part was not the sexy part. There had been some who, in the past, had tried to make it sexy; inviting her over, offering her a glass of wine, or meeting at the back of a quiet bar. Sort of like a first date, complete with chitter chatter and a friendly squabble over the tab. She shifted in her seat, a strip of skin on her thighs catching against the hot metal of the chair, the rest slipping around under her skirt. She twirled a pen in her hand, dropped it, picked it up again.

He’d brought checklists, and she appreciated the lack of romanticism in it, although he’d presented them shyly, after much excusing of the idea of a checklist in the first place. They sat quietly, filled them out. Most of it she already knew, hearsay through the grapevine, friends of friends, but it was important to be explicit. He’d gone to get her a very complicated coffee, come back with it balanced precarious in both hands. They pushed the papers across to each other, both of their eyes intent on the information, intent on getting through the awkward parts.

“So.”

“Yup. Mine is... pretty straightforward, I think.”

“Yeah. Seems like we line up well.”

“Yeah.” She smiled, although she’d been trying not to. There was a flirtation about negotiation that bothered her. Somehow, if this part was enjoyable, it wasn’t serious enough. She smiled again anyway.

“I don’t have a cane, but...” He stared at the paper, his hands shaking a little.

“I do. If you’ve never used one, I can show you some things beforehand, we can go slow. Or not...”

“No, no I have. I just... don’t have my own.” He brushed his hair back from his face, and she watched him, look past to the hairs he missed, sticking to the sweat on his forehead, past his dark brows and into the dark eyes.

“Ummm, a couple questions, if that’s alright?”

“Sure. Of course.”

“You’ve got “No” next to name calling. Which is totally awesome. I just want to be clear - specific things, or...? Everything?”

“Pretty much everything.” She stared into her coffee, light caramel drizzle across the top sinking into the foam, little craters and valleys, sugar eating away at sugar.

“If we play more, we talk about it. But there are a few... well, a lot, really, that... get me to a bad place. I’d prefer if, at first, we just lay off everything.”

“That sounds great. And thanks for telling me.”

“No problem.”

She looked down at the long list, again, trying to find anything she’d missed, anything that could get them into bad mojo territory.

He’d had experience with floggers, with rope, and with electrical play. He’d trained on the hitty things she liked, canes and whips, had a small collection of his own stuff, and an apartment in the industrial part of town, which meant fewer neighbors and better themed arquitecture. He was single, and his STD paperwork checked out. She had a copy of his drivers license and a phone call set up before and afterward, to a friend, just to be sure, the same friend same friend who’d reccomended him through a friend of their friend. Seemed like it always went that way, in these communities, no matter what city she was in. Just enough extra information that actually meeting and playing and having sex with someone through the internet didn’t seem as rash. She knew it wasn’t anymore; knew plenty of friends who’d met, and even married, that way. But she still never shook the feeling of anonymity there, never felt quite safe enough. It felt better this way, when it started from a real world connection. An in person connection. In the flesh.

“So. I’ve gotta get back...” He mumbled a little, under his breath, and stood up.

“Right! Yes, right.” This was a lunch date, she remembered suddenly, his lunch break.

“So, I’ll see you on Saturday.”

“Yup. Eight?”

“Eight sounds great.” He ran his fingers through his hair one more time, like something out of a teenage sitcom, and a few drops of sweat landed on the table, sinking and spreading in the unfinished wood. She liked it.

“See you.” She folded the paperwork into her purse, and sat and sipped at sugar, watching him walk back up the block, pleated suit pants over what proved to be a very nice ass indeed.

*

Dan Paterson was his name, and he worked with a guy who was a friend of her friend Marci, from back home. She was traveling on business, a strange city, but she was here long enough that somebody to play with, while it wasn’t a requirement, was a serious perk. It had been a long time brewing in her, and it took a long time after it bubbled up to admit that, with eyes downcast and shaking a little, she was better in all the parts of her life when she was playing with someone. The little ache of the bruises as she put on the skirt in the morning, sitting in a meeting and wondering if anyone questioned why she, in the middle of summer, still wore thin, long sleeved blouses every day. Even the memories of a recent encounter, slipping unbidden, into her head. Sitting at her desk, she’d remember herself, the image in a place so different, in a body so different, than the one sitting demurely in the office, typing or answering a phone or explaining a spreadsheet to a balding, bored businessman. She shivered when it happened a little, as if with a physical shaking she’d bring the disparate parts of her life a little closer. Although it must be, she thought, just how far away they were that brought her to shiver in the first place.

And so she made the effort, now, to play on a regular basis. To find men like Dan, in cities like this one.

In her hotel room, Saturday. She pulled a black suitcase from under the bed, almost identical to the one already open, sitting on the chair, in the corner. One suitcase for business attire, the other for fetish. It was standard, the room, what she always had on trips like these, tiny variations from city to city. She wondered if there were conventions for this, the vaguely bland but never boring aesthetic of The Four Star Hotel. They probably had meetings about carpet color, about room size and pricing.

She pulled the zipper of the suitcase open, flipped open the top, and mused over corsets, stocking, underwear in lace and mesh. She held up stockings, checking for runs. The painting on the wall above her bed showed a man pulling at a fishing pole, balance precarious on the edge of small row boat. It was actually a good painting, she thought, as she rolled one black thigh high and then the other over her legs, still warm and slightly damp from the shower. Good light, good choice of frame. She pulled a bra with sheer cups and black underwire over her shoulders, feeling the fabric slip across her nipples and the straps settle on the bones of her shoulder. He looked like he was really trying for the fish, fighting, yes, but also trying to come to an agreement with it. His brow was knotted, but thoughtful. Fish, I’m going to catch you, she imagined him thinking. Maybe throw you back, but the act of catching, that’s not what’s going to kill you. Give it up.

She laid her shoes on the bed and moved to the bathroom, settling a red and black corset loosley around her middle. It was a constant debate, to corset or not to corset. Wearing one, the disadvantages were obvious; less skin exposed, a more complicated and arguably less sexy process if it were to be removed. But wearing one she felt a little straighter, a little more in her body. Like a little bit of containment, just for her, from the get go. Which didn’t make the act of tight-lacing oneself in a hotel bathroom any easier, but she’d been here before.

She put on makeup, mostly eye makeup, mostly cheap, bad eye makeup that she’d experimented with and searched to find over the years. Which eyeliner will smudge just right, which mascara will bleed and run without hurting her eyes. Good pain good, bad pain bad. She slipped her stilletthos over her stockinged feet, an almost inaudible shush of the fine mesh against the satin lining. Over everything, her regular trench coat, covered collar bone to knee. She checked her key card, her wallet, her phone. She texted Marci to let her know she was leaving. And she shut the door behind her, a faux-gold lock clicking in the thin wooden door.

*

The steps to his apartment were metal with chipping paint, little flakes floating down against the building as she clanged, step after step, up four flights. It was the kind of apartment, again, in young adult sitcoms, with enough space and an aesthetic to make an audience wonder how the starving artists ever afforded it. She was beginning to suspect that Dan, despite his obvious real-human status, was nothing more than a compilation of television tropes from her childhood. She took a deep breath on the landing, her stomach turning under the strapped leather and lace. She was nervous, and a little hungry, but it was always like that, right before.

She pressed a red manicured nail to the bell button, and waited.

The minutes ticked by, and nothing. He’d told her to ring once, those were the instructions, and so she stood, shivering from the cold, on the landing, on the grates that connected back to the brick, the brick that rested on great metal beams that formed the skeleton of the building. They portruded form the sides, under the windows, I-beams rusting at the corners. She rubbed her fingers together, imagining what tiny shards of those beams would feel like rolled in the delicate skin between pointer and thumb.

“Come in.”

She hadn’t heard the door open, and her breath caught in her throat as she looked at him. Without thinking, she walked forward.

He wore a simple black button down, and dark, clean jeans. The toes of his black boots shown in the candlelight. He shut the door and she watched as the flames shuddered, maybe fifty of them, from various perches and shelves around the place. Candles everywhere. He came up behind her and put a hand at the back of her neck, slipping his fingers to clench around the collar of her coat.

“I’ll take this.”

He hung it up, leaving her standing in her corset and stockings. Coming back to her, he put a hand on her waist and guided her to the low sofa at the back of the apartment, one big room, she realized now, a flicker of coherent thought coming through. She was sinking, she realized, in the gentle, delicate way she always sunk. Her movements became slower and softer, her eyes found the floor and her chin tilted downwards. As if a weight she hadn’t known she was carrying was, while still on her, beginning to shift, beginning to settle. She sat, knees together, hands in her lap.

“Very nice. You look very nice.” He sat on the coffee table, facing her.

“Thank you.”

The slap came fast, and his hand was back at his side before she had time to register what had happened. Her cheek buzzed with the force of it, a hum getting warmer as the impact sunk through layer after layer of skin.

“Thank you? Excuse me?”

“Thank you... Sir.”

“Good.” His voice was measured, almost quiet. The room didn’t echo, and as she sat, getting smaller by the second, she imagined a cloth, invisible, over the entire place. The sofa, the dark partitions between this space and kitchen, the bed, tucked away in the corner, and the chains that hung there, all coated in muffling dampener. His voice seemed to cut straight to her, straight to the middle of chest, and resonate in the bones there.

“Now. Are you ready?”

“Yes Sir.”

He took her hands, and his voice softened, just a little.

“Do you remember your words?”

“Yes Sir.”

“Recite them for me.”

“Colors, Sir.”

Another slap, gentler this time, a reminder.

“Recite them.”

“Yes Sir.” Her voice was fast and low, and full of breath. “Red, safeword, mean stop. If I am gagged or otherwise unable to speak, I will have an object to drop, which means stop. Yellow means I am close to a limit. A check in from you will two distinct squeezes of your hand to my hand. Two distinct squeezes back means I am alright, one long squeeze means I am not, and to stop.” She closed her mouth, her head racing, trying to find anything she’d missed.

“Very good.” He reached a hand under her chin, tilting her eyes up to meet him. Dark, deep eyes, flickering with the candles. “Very good. Now, breath.”

And she did, gasping in, knowing only then that she’d stopped at all.

*

The bed was soft and cool under knees. Her arms, above her head, were twined in tight, neat ropes, wound in triplicate or more with each pass. After the ropes and the rings, there were chains hung from a beam above the bed, the ends after the junction dangling down. She clung to them, cold at first and then the metal warmed in her hands, grasped at them through the sweat, through each thud of his hand.

He’d lead her there, hands on her hips, and kissed her all over her face, stopping to tap lightly on her jaw with his fingers. He watched her face as she arched, curving with the scrape of his nails on her back. He’d smiled at it, sinister, delighted. He’d told her to kneel at his feet, bent her body over the bed, and pulled up her thin black skirt to the line of her corset, bare ass exposed and twitching. And he’d spanked her, soft and then harder, a patient warm up.

He held the cane now, and how exactly she’d gotten here she didn’t know. He’d put her here slowly, with careful ropes and a few check ins. He was soft in it almost, not hesitant, but taking his time, as if to savor her. He’d kissed her again, after the spanking, and then taken off his shirt, somewhere along the way. It happened when she went deep like this, far and then farther under, so distant from the rest of her that the path there was unclear. It came down in bursts of three, and she counted, as instructed.

“Eleven.” Thwap.

“Twelve.” Thwap.

“Thirteen, Sir, thank you Sir.” She gasped, hands slipping on the chain, her body lurching forward, bare red ass exposed, hinting at the darker parts underneath.

He walked around the front of her, ran and hand over her face, ending with a clenched fist in her hair and yanking her eyes up to meet him.

“How many?”

“Thirteen, Sir.”

“Do you think thirteen is enough?”

“No Sir.”

“Me neither. But I think you’ll have to very good, very good, to get anymore.”

She whimpered, just a small whimper.

“Yes Sir.”

He put the cane down on a long table next to the bed, and moved toward her again. His hands were caloused, real skin there, smooth callouses from years of work, hard but not rough. They reach for her bra, pulling the delicate lacing aside and under, exposing her tits. He held her face with the other hand, and gently rubbed his thumb over a nipple.

“Do you want to be good for me?”

“Yes Sir.” She gasped, meeting his eyes, falling hard into them.

“Then you don’t move unless I say so. Is that understood?”

“Yes Sir.”

He slapped her face and pinched the round, pink button between his thumb and forefinger. Pain, so sharp and clean, shot through her breast and up into her head. That heady pain, on the edge of too much.

He reached up, and unhooked her arms from the chains. She stayed on her knees, hands above her head, arms held together still by the ropes.

“Go get the flogger. The red one, at the end. Don’t use your hands.”

She moved immediately, hands still above her head, arms straight as if held by a force upward. She walked on her knees to the egde of the bed, and swung her feet around to stand, unsteady on her heels. Her skirt fell a little over her ass, the curve of it and the sweat holding the fabric mostly up still, welts across it lined pink, deeper red pulsing along the center line of them.

She hobbled to the table, knelt, and took the handle of the flogger in her teeth. Still on her knees, she made her back to him, to where he still hadn’t moved, standing there watching her struggle.

He took the handle from between her lips, pink and wet and shining, and she missed the taste of it immediately, that damp leather smell. He lifted her, under her arms, and steered her away from the bed.

“Walk ahead of me. Don’t you dare put those arms down.”

And she did, held there, barely seeing what was in front of her. Put her arms down? Did arms go down? She couldn’t be sure.

Across from the bedroom space, in the opposite corner, was a simple, shining, black bench. It came her waist, and stretched out ahead with a space for her torso to lay. He bent her forward, and clipped her right ankle into a metal shackle. He slapped her thighs open, and paused, and rose up to look at her. She trembled, afraid of him, small and knowing what was coming next, looking for any, any way out of it.

“I was going to flog you. But I’ve noticed, it seems, that you’re wet.”

“Yes... yes sir.”

He lifted his hand just in front of her face, the one that had slapped her thigh. Moving close to her, he pushed his fingers passed her lips, and she tasted herself, a tang, the rough of his fingers grating into her tongue.

“You like this, don’t you?”

“Yes... yes Sir.”

“Then I suppose we’ll have that flogging after all.”

He bent down again, pushed her legs apart, and secured the second shackle on her ankle. He trailed the tips of leather up her legs, along the lips between her legs, leather flicking there, wet and swollen, and then up her back to brush lightly across her shoulders. He unlaced her corset carefully, whipping the string out of each eyelet, little stings all the way up. It feel to her feet, her back exposed, her underthings in a pile beneath her. And it wasn’t until the first strike that she cried out, opened her mouth and moaned, the sound quiet at first, and then louder, and then louder.

*

She hadn’t always met men like this, on trips like this. She hadn’t always been so careful to steer far and away from events in her local scene, to be aware of the calendar and where they were happening and at which bars, so that she could take care to avoid them. A shadow of the memory, the time before, flickered as the flogger came down again, and again, and again.

She’d met Mitch at her first munch. She was more outgoing than he’d seen a new submissive on the scene in a long time, or so he’d tell her later, wrapped up in his limbs, skin stinging from the sweat sinking into the welts. She’d played with him first in her own apartment, and then later at his, and then again and again until his apartment and her apartment were the same apartment. Four years they’d been together, moving into kinks and deeper into the scene than even he had, exploring together. She was his pet, his slut, his little girl. She was in love, and as it always does, the in-love made the falling-out that much harder, that much faster, with that much more brutal of a final meeting with the ground.

She watched the candles in Dan’s apartment, trying not to remember it, but it came unbidden, into her head. He picked up a second flogger, and was figure-eighting across her back, an almost uninterrupted pattern of stings and thuds. He paused to run a hand up the back of her knee, up her thigh, paused to slip between her legs and find her clit. She moaned, the first taste of a pleasurable sensation in what seemed like hours. He went lightly, gently, in slow motions through the slick of her, and she moaned again, and opened her eyes ever so slightly as it stopped. She looked through wet lashes; he’d moved in front of her, and she felt the tip of his cock on her mouth.

He kept it there, just against her mouth, and she imagined his view, looking down her back, red and sweating, her ass pushed up in the air, exposed, the top of her head just off the bench, at just the right height for this. He untied her arms, clipping one wrist to the bench along her side, how the cuff had gotten there she didn’t remember. He held the other wrist in his hand, and slowly pushed into her mouth. His cock pushed along her tongue, the head butting into the back of her throat, meeting the resistance there and pushing farther still until she gagged on him.

“Touch yourself.” He told her, and as he fucked her faced, slipped a ring of jingling bells into her tied hand. She pushed her arm underneath her, finding her wetness spread across the bench, finding the source of it.

Shudders ran up her thighs from the pressure of her own hand, harder now, and faster. He reached back and began to slap her ass, thrusting into her mouth while he hurt her, and still the thoughts of her past persisted, somewhere back there, beneath the sweat and the slap of their bodies. How it had ended, and ended badly. All she regretted from Mitch, from that world, and she hated it, that it could intrude like this, that it still had this power over her. All this, so complicated, brewing beneath it all.

Dan moved, her mouth suddenly empty, walking around to the back of her, running a hand over her ass and slapping hard. Her mouth gaping, hollow, she bit on her own lips, burying her face in the bench as she felt the head of his cock press against her wet slit.

He held it there, waiting.

“You want me to fuck you? Is that you want?”

She shuddered, arching back to him.

“Can you take it? Can you?” He ran the head over her lips in slow circles, teasing her, threatening to take her at any time.

She sputtered, gasping, wanting nothing else, knowing he was right, that she did want it, more than anything, to press back into him and feel herself full and pounded. Yes she wanted it. She wanted to live here, in this moment, not another, just here. Just here as a thing to be used, just here as a thing to pulse, to sweat, to swell, to burst in the fire of it.

“Yes Sir. Please Sir, yes Sir please Sir.”

She screamed as he entered her, the slaps coming in fast across her ass, the thrusts against her body melting through to her clit, to her hot, wet hole clenching around him. He pulled back, pushed into her, pulled back, and slapped her ass hard with an open, sweaty palm. The sting of a hit when wet, always worse than when it was dry; this she knew. This was home.

And with each slap, each thrust, she let a little more go. She let the chatter and the complicated mess of years long gone melt into her, out of her, the complicated questions of the future and worries about tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow burning away. She arched into him, bracing herself on the bench and the slaps grew harder. She cried, muffled spit into the padded leather under her face. She broke, him thrusting into her, broke and sobbed with each push, with each push asking for more, please more, yes please more.

“You like that?” He asked her, and there wasn’t a word she could give that could say how much.

“Yes Sir.” She gasped, feeling him filling her over and over again, the thumb of his free hand pressing into the pucker of her ass, a whole new place of muscles clenching, seizing in the belly of her. That was where she lived, and he knew it.

“Yeah you do. Tell me how much.” His voice shook with the thrusts into her.

She mumbled, incoherent, sputtering in her own spit, that yes, she loved it, yes, please more, yes Sir.

“Tell me, say it.”

She began to sob, raking her finger nails against the leather, as the slaps turned to punches.

“Tell me you like it.”

Sobbing from deep within her, falling in rhythm with his cock, the head pushing into to her, heaving out from her lungs, wailing like something mythical.

“I said, tell me you like it!”

The words came out of her mouth in spit and in cries.

“Yes, yes please, yes please Sir I like it Sir yes please Sir yes please,” she yelled as she came around him, as he let himself go inside of her, pulled him into her, throbbing the two of them, animals in their growling and their hunger satisfied.

The bells dropped gently from her hands. She hadn’t realized she was still holding them.  A wave, so sudden, the pleasure of her body still fresh and slick and sticky, and she began to shake. She closed her eyes. She shook as he stepped around her and held her head to look at her, but her eyes were shut tight, away from the world, turning somewhere deep and dark. He unclipped her hands, always keeping a hand on her, he pulled his pants up and buckled his belt.

“Are you okay? Marian...?”

She shook the whole bench now, trembling. But she’d warned him this would happen; that this is what it was like for her, afterwards. That thought was still there, a comfort, that he knew, at least on paper, this had been coming.

“Here, come here. I’ve got you. It’s okay. You’re safe here, I’ve got you.” He held her face to his shoulder, kneeling on the ground next to her. She tried to pull her feet up onto the bench, such a futile attempt, when this happened, of wanting to be infinitely smaller, of the physical attempts to close, to be the smallest possible thing.

He unclipped her feet, kept a hand on her back, stroked her hair so gently.

She couldn’t look at him, and couldn’t, hard as she tried, get her entire body onto the bench. She didn’t answer, kept her eyes shut, just get smaller. He picked her up, curled and rigid, and carried to the bed. He laid her softly down, and pulled the covers over, and wrapped himself around her as she cried into his chest, holding her close and hard.

She thought of Mitch, caught in a spiral of the last days, of the hours alone. She circled and circled and then, breathing shallow, fast breaths. She tried to breath deeper, but couldn’t. She pulled at him, this man with her there, clung to him, at once fighting against him and relieved in the fact that he held on. Like so many tipping boats, she swiveled around him, and he held on, held on to her through the sobs and the shaking, held on and held on.

“Let it go,” he was telling her. Dan was telling her.

“Let it go,” He said it over and over again, hushed, into her hair.

She gave up, letting it break across her. Hook in her mouth, pushing up to the surface, she opened her eyes.

She was aware of her skin, of her naked skin against the skin of the man holding her. Her thoughts floated, in and out of a mist, she couldn’t see one long enough to hold it, long enough for it to be a worry. She loved it here.

“Hey.” He put his hand under her chin, enough pressure to lift her face to look at him, but not to force it. She looked, happily.

“Hey,” she said.

“You okay?” He asked, arms around her, mess of sheets tangled between their feet.

“Yeah. Yeah, I think so,” she said.

And they giggled together, in the tangle of sheets.

abuse: a communal perspective (part deux)

Back to some of the initial questions this started out with. Namely, what to do with an instance of abuse in the frame of a larger community. Or rather, a friend of mine (now, a woman I'd consider a close friend of mine) is living and working in close proximity with an ex dom who abused her, and watching as he pursues other women, and what exactly do we do with that kind of complicated thing?

There's a great Pervocracy post on the legalities of this question, and I don't exactly want to get into those. I think important and relevant, but it's just not what I'm focusing on right now. So, read Cliff's thoughts about it if you like, she's amazing, as per usual.

The first reaction that I ever have to abuse, and abuse in communal situations, is that yes, of course, you should speak up about what happened to you. And at the end of this post, that's still going to be my perspective, I think. It's just a lot, a lot more complicated than that.

Talking to Hannah about what to do at the festival, and what to do in her local scene, she said something that hit me really hard, along the lines of: "I don't want to out him here, or to talk about the things he did to my friends here, because I feel like this is the place [the festival] where he comes to do the good he does in the world."

And I completely understand that, but I don't think it's enough. I hate that the questions of "what is enough," even comes up, because at the end of the day, I don't think that's the right question to ask. When a person does a bad thing, many, many times over, it doesn't exist on the side of some magical scale, one that can be balanced out by doing good. I also know that bad people do good things sometimes. I suppose, for me, it brings up the question of how many bad things, and how many bad instances of abuse, make a person "a bad person." Even typing the question, I sort of know the answer already: really, just the one. And it's not the one you think.

It comes down to a place of judgment. Faced with letting someone know about instances of abuse, like Hannah is faced with at the moment, you start to question your own judgement. Not the judgement you have of that person (because that's pretty clear for her, and it would be for me, I think), but how to use that judgement. Whether that judgement is enough to go out into the world and say "Hey, guess what, you need to know something about this guy." And again, it's a question that sort of answers itself.

There are, I know, two sides to every story. That said, if that story is anywhere near a reasonable misunderstanding, or an isolated instance of abuse, hearing both sides of it isn't going to be a problem for anyone. Meaning, the question of "should I tell?" holds in it the assumption that the other person, the abusing person, somehow isn't telling. And that's the one instance. The attitude someone takes towards their actions: this is what, for me, tells me their character, far more than their actions standing alone.*

*In some cases. Obviously, I couldn't give a fuck about what really abusive people think about their abuse. But I'm trying to wade into the middle ground here, where it's not so clear cut.

Because imagine a situation, the situation that always comes up in these debates, in which there's a dispute about whether or not a situation was abusive.* Partner A claims that they were mistreated; Partner B counters that Partner A was not, that Partner B was not abusive. What I think a lot of people miss here, and what I think is the catching-all for the accused-but-not-actually-guilty abusers, is the treatment of this conversation, both between the partners and in the community. Meaning, if there was an instance that was questionable, would the parties involved not talk about it? If no harm was meant, if there was simply a miscommunication, wouldn't it be resolved, even if it ended the relationship, as opposed to driving a divisive stake, and splitting a communities into factioned allegiances? Wouldn't it be at least an amiable, if not maybe tense and hurt and guilty, admittance by both parties that something, whatever that something was, did, in fact, happen?

*Note: a lot of the time, the BDSM community talks about dominants abusing submissives. Based on the nature of the game, I understand this. But it can definitely go both ways, so I'm trying to stay away from a language that assumes one way or the other.

Basically, what I'm saying is: an abuser who needs the abused party not to talk about it is clearly an abuser, no matter what they say. Were they not, there would be an explanation, I think. A conversation with new partners that said something like "Well, yes, we used to play together. This is what happened. These are the mistakes I made, and these are the mistakes my then-partner made. We couldn't come a resolution about it, and aren't together any longer. Here's what I learned from it." Etc.

What paints an abuser most clearly, I think, is the denial of past instances. The proof of the existence of abuse made obvious in the need to shroud it in some kind of secrecy. Which is why, I think, speaking up about abuse is never a question, because once you're in a place where the abuser themselves won't, it's clearly an instance where it needs to happen.

So. That's my happy logical conclusion. And I wish that it were ever that cut and dry. Sometimes, maybe, sometimes it is. But know there are more complex situations, and I know people are not emotionless robots of logic and reason. I also know false accusations exist. I don't really know what to do about those. I think that if we had a culture, in kink or anywhere else, that offered women (and yes, that's gender essentialist and stereotypical, but I'm going with statistics for ease of language, here) a better avenue for voicing their frustrations, and an equal footing from which to deal with this sort of thing, false accusations would go down a whole lot. But I don't have any answers.

In terms of the community, and what to do in a larger framework, I don't really think there's any answer but talk. Talk talk talk. Talk about it with your friends when you need support. Talk about it in a non-escalating, non-gossiping way. Talk about women who might encounter this man in the future, who might fall for what you fell for. Approach them, and say "Hey, I don't mean to butt into your business, and I recognize that you're an autonomous, adult being who is free to make their own choices. But I just wanted to offer a thought about that guy who's been flirting with you. I've had some bad experiences with him. Really bad, actually. It may be that that's not the case with you, and I'm not trying to smear his name. He may have changed, and things may absolutely be different with the two of you. But I wish some of the women he'd hurt before me had let me know, so I'm trying to pass it forward."

I really, really don't see anything wrong with that. Because say that new woman, the new partner, the warned one, then takes that information to her possible-flirting-partner. If everything was hunky dory, or if he's grown a bunch since then, or whatever, then he can tell her that. They can talk about it in an open and honest way. If he hasn't, then... well, then I think it sort of proves it's own point, right?

I just don't see another way to be a self-governing community. I don't see another way to keep the scene safer. Reputation can be a strange thing, full of rumor mill and misinformation. But it can also be a great thing, full of recommendations and positive experiences. I don't think having a reputation is a bad thing. I think that hiding what your reputation might be... well, if it might be so terrible, that's all I needed to know.

abuse: a personal perspective (part un)

This is part one of two. Two's already started, so it'll be up later today. If your read this (there are like, three of you? Which is awesome! Hi handful of people! Thank you thank you!), keep in mind there's a second part on it's way shortly.

There's an argument that comes up every few months on the BDSM community subreddit that I'm a part of (it's here, and also in the resources section). It's a debate that I'm sure comes up in lots of kink communities, online or not. It usually starts with a question or a story about a bad experience during play with a particular person, and then the community continues to discuss abuse, abuse and BDSM, and what the appropriate course of action is when it happens. What is abuse? Is it more likely here than elsewhere? Who do you tell? Who do you not tell? Who's place is it to talk about? What responsibilities do you, as the experiencing-of-this-bad-thing person, have to tell and/or to not tell? Where does accountability stop and the rumor mill start? How do we as a community treat reputation, and the idea of reputation?

It's an interesting argument, and one I've participated in before on an... intellectual basis, I suppose. But I had a conversation this weekend that brought it a little closer to home. And I don't think my views have changed, but they've certainly gotten much clearer.

I work for a festival each summer, a big hippie party in the woods. And although I'd known this woman in years prior, we had a kink-recognition moment this winter that was pretty great. "Wait, did I see you at kink fest?" "Wait, you went to kink fest?" "Wait, yay!" "Oh man, yay yay!" The conversation devolved (or evolved?) pretty quickly into techniques and rope preferences, and I was happy to find a kinky friend in this other part of my life.

But, as I said, that sort of changed this weekend (not the friend part; the knowing her better part. As in, I got to). We were walking around the grounds of the festival, taking a break from working, and we headed towards a part of the grounds where her ex hung around sometimes. And Hannah (not her real name, but various places on the internet have told me it means "grace," or "beauty," or "passion," all of which this woman is) couldn't keep going. And her kids went ahead with another friend of ours, and we hung back to talk. She told me about him, this man, who'd been the first person to introduce her to BDSM. This man who had two sides to him, one that was sweet and benevolent and caring, all of which she learned quickly was a pile of crap. This man who was emotionally abusive. This man who, over the years they were together, took that emotional and psychological abuse to the physical place. This man who lied about his STD status. This man who eventually choked her out without her permission, who hit her in nonconsensual ways, who manipulated abuse under the guise of BDSM. This man who ignored her safeword. This man who raped her, and who she knows from her own experience and those of others, is a fairly terrible partner. This man who puts up a very good front. This man who, she's learned in the last year, has done this other women before. This man who, she's probably sure, will do this to other women again.

I'm not going to go into a lot of specifics (I have her permission to talk about it here, but they're just not needed). We hugged, and she cried, and I cried with her. I cried for a lot of reasons, and then I drove the two hours home and did a lot of thinking.

I usually hate it when the "How is BDSM like abuse?" questions comes up, because I see (and much of the BDSM community sees) little to no link between abusive (read: actually abusive) relationships, and what we do in kink. But in this sort of situation, the question seems relevant. It has very little to do with healthy kinky relationships, I think, and more to do with the physical action of what we do and its proximity to what actual abuse looks like.

Physical abuse, in non-kinky relationships, is usually distinct. As in, the physical language between partners doesn't usually involve pain, either giving or receiving. In kink, that changes. And the line between "ow, that amazing, ow yes please thank you Sir," and "ow, stop, ow, safeword, ow, red," becomes a matter of consent, and a matter of enjoyment. I like this about kink; I like that there is no action that is okay, even if the person didn't like it (read: "Well, I mean, I was kissing her, I thought she liked it;" as opposed to "Well, I was hitting her, I thought she liked it." You've got to be much more explicit about one than the other). In this way, it's not so different from the non-kink world (or rather, not so different than I'd like to think the Whole Big World could be, one day). As in, anything without consent becomes exactly that: nonconsensual, abuse, sexual assault, and rape. Doesn't matter what the initial physical interaction was; now, it's the not the same. Not even in the same universe.

Those last two paragraphs are meant to acknowledge, and then put aside, the idea that abuse is easier in BDSM relationships. I understand where that idea can come from, but I don't agree with it. If anything, the kink community is more of consent-culture oriented community than the Outside World. But I do understand how it could look that way. To those people, I say: look harder.

I've never been in a abusive relationship, kinky or otherwise, so I'm not speaking from personal experience. But hearing about the psychological and emotional abuse that happened to Hannah hit me just as hard as hearing about the physical assaults. I don't want to set up a kinky vs. non-kinky dichotomy here, but I imagine they were harder for her than might be for other people involved in non-kinky relationships. Not to say that abuse isn't hard, and terrible, in any situation. But I've found, in my friends and in my relationships, that kink often has a great deal of trust and open communication involved, much more so than many non-kinky relationships I've been involved in. So maybe it's wrong to say that abuse is worse in kink, and more correct to say abuse is harder in relationships built on trust and vulnerability. Again, it goes back to the consent-culture idea; one is more aware, because the things we play with require it, than the other. And with kink, the trust involved can relate directly to trusting someone physically, with your body, and emotionally, with your vulnerability, in a very direct way. In kink, when I play, I offer up the smallest, most defenseless parts of myself, and I ask my partner to hold them, to play with them. I do this because it's fun for me; I do this because it's fun for him; he does it for similar reasons. But there is risk, physical and emotional, that I don't think is as often encountered in non-kink relationships, simply because there's not an interest. Do I think all non-kinky relationships are trivial and trust-less? Not at all. I just think it isn't as often confronted as directly as it is in kink.

Brief caveat: I'm not talking simply about play, or play parties, or casual kink encounters, if you will. I'm talking about emotionally involved kinky relationships. Just... a note about seriousness, I suppose.

What I'm trying to say (and I'm saying that a lot in this post.. maybe it's a difficult subject? It's a muddled post, that's for sure) is that BDSM abuse can hit much closer to home, particularly because of that line that exists, because the materials we play with (emotional, physical, psychological) are closer to the materials of abuse than, say, a non-kink relationship. To this point, Hannah spoke to me about how confusing her physical reactions were when this would happen. How her body didn't understand, that these were her partner's hands, that these were actions they'd played with in a happy way so many times, suddenly turned sinister. How hard it was to feel that, and all of the fear and betrayal and panic, and how lost it left her. And when you're turned on by pain, like I am, like she is, it's really, really hard when your body thinks Bad Pain is Good Pain. A mixed message from beneath your skin. When she told about this, that's when I cried with her.

And on top of everything, she's confronted with him. In communal situations, like this festival, like the local BDSM scene. And there stands the question of what, exactly, she should do about it.

Back in a bit with ruminations on that question, and more.

Wanting and Needing and This Little Depression Thing

I've been thinking a lot lately about how I differentiate between "want" and "need" in terms of relationships. In most cases, they're specific to BDSM relationships, but I think it's really sort of all romantic relationships. I'll get around to how this relates to depression (or Big D Depression? I'm not sure what the difference is there, or why I feel the need to point one out...).

I don't think I "need" a partner, or that I "need" my current partner, but that's a sort of pretty obvious one. I'd survive; I'd continue to eat and sleep and work and write and have orgasms and call my mother and pay bills and blog, if he left. I'd be really sad for a while. Probably a long while. But I wouldn't cease to function as a human being.

And yet I'm really careful of that word and how it relates to romantic relationships, and it really scares me when other people use it. I think where I differentiate between what I'd deem a healthy, non-squicky independent relationship, and what I'd deem a get-yourself-a-less-codependent-perspective-and-outta-there relationship; I think I'd define it without such a split infinitive, like: the difference is in how you're able to feel happy.

So, it's not live or die, it's not survive or not survive. It's your ability to be content, to be normal, to be happy, whatever you want to call it - all on your own.

I say that like it's an easy thing. And although I don't think I'm clinically big-D Depressed, I know, and have felt acutely, how not-easy a thing that can be. Mostly, it manifests as the Everything Thing (basically, the world coming down around your head and everything being not good enough all at once. Ze Frank explains it better; the link is to his show on the Everything Thing. He's great - not kink related at all, but really great). So I don't mean to brush it off (see also: Chase That Happy, which sometimes works, although sometimes the Everything Thing is too big for Chasing Teh Happy).

What kink does for me, I think, isn't dissimilar to what cutting used to do for me, although I think it does it in a healthier way, and to a much better extent. And maybe that's even taking it too far; I think they're not the same, but that maybe my desire for them comes from a similar place. I think kink lets me have a place where I'm allowed to feel pain, allowed to feel bad, allowed to feel shame and humiliation, allowed to cry and scream and rage. And all that gets lifted away, all the bad gets gutted out, and at the end, I'm clearer. I think clearer, I think faster and sharper, I'm calmer emotionally, and I chase my own happy better.

Would I find other places were I not in a kinky relationship to do this? Sure. I try to anyway; when I'm sad, or feeling the Everything Thing (which is really a better word than "sad," a more accurate word, anyway), I try to honor that, and sit with that, and let myself feel it as much as I feel it. There's always a little guilt (or a lot of guilt), and some pressure that I shouldn't be wallowing,* but I get there. Kink is a different way to get there, I think. They're not interchangeable, in any quantities, they just... sometimes seem to fit in some of the same holes (no sexy puns intended).

*I know that I sometimes wallow, but really, I hate that word. Like feeling anything just for the sake of feeling it is a bad thing. I know sometimes I can wallow; that I need a kick in the butt to let things go, but I don't think that's nearly as much of the time, for most people, as those most people think it is. Feelings are feelings. Honor them, let them take their time. They're going to cause way more problems if you don't.

So I guess what I mean when I say you shouldn't "need" anyone is that I think you (the proverbial, royal you) should be a whole person all by yourself. And that doesn't mean you can't be a better person with the right partner, or partners. That doesn't mean other people can't bring out the better parts in you (because obviously, people do this, even people you're not in relationships with). It doesn't mean you can't want someone really, really bad, or really a lot, and it doesn't mean that picturing your life without them should be some cheery happy thing.

It just means you should be a whole person. And that's enough of a not-easy thing all on it's own, so good for anybody (me, maybe?) even trying.

My Mother

...is a psychologist. A very good one. A very well-studied one, as it turns out.

Mom: Hey, is that a new tattoo?
Me: Oh, uh, yeah.
Mom: When did you get it?
Me: In Ireland, in Belfast, actually. [Partner's name] too.
Mom: Huh. Is it... it looks like a DSM-IV number...
Me: Yup.
Mom: Oh! Cool! Oh... which one?
Me: Well...

(crickets...)

Me: You really want to know?
Mom: Yeah. Sure...
Me: It's the code for sexual masochism.

(crickets...).

So. That's done, I guess.

"vanilla"

So, there's sex. There's kinky sex, and vanilla sex. Two kinds, right?

Well, wrong (power dynamics are always going on, many people use all kinds of props and roles and scenes, etc. etc.), but that's beside the point. There's a way that kinky people and kinky communities use the word "vanilla" that really bugs me, like it's some dirty, other-caste, somehow unenlightened. And so I want to talk about that. Harrrrr.

This maybe isn't really going to be very long, because that's basically what it is. Kinky people and/or groups and/or the internet use "vanilla," to mean "less than." Not all the time, not by a long shot all the time, but sometimes. Like, when people talk about their partners, or ex-partners, as "just vanilla," or "I think she's pretty vanilla," etc. I understand that, in some cases, what they might be saying is "she's not kinky," but in some other cases, it really starts to sound like they're saying "he's an up-tight, non sex-positive, distant and removed partner." And all those things are crappy. But all those things have nothing to do with whether or not you're kinky.

It's similar to mono/poly conundrum, and resonates a little with The Pervocracy Geek Social Fallacies (I swear, there's going to be a post where I don't link back to there. Maybe). Members of the "out" or "fringe" sexual identity, whatever that may be, look back at the more mainstream sexual identity and talk about it as if it were less than, as if the people still participating in that identity either hadn't gotten around to being deviant yet, or they just weren't smart enough/adventurous enough/whatever enough to figure it out. And then there's this elitist sex attitude, which is... sort of bullshit. No sex is inherently better than any other sex, as long as said sex is: a) consensual, and b) pleasurable for the parties involved.*

*(... and yes, I mean, "bad" sex can be bad because... well, bad sex happens. And I'd say that sex is sort of... worse than good sex. Bad sex = worse than good sex. Oh, tautology).

So I tried to imagine good vanilla sex, and to be honest, it took a little while (I think that's partly because when I imagine sex, I immediately imagine myself as involved somehow, and that... doesn't really work with vanilla sex. Or rather, I couldn't stop the me-vanilla-sex from just morphing into kinky sex somehow†. I eventually had to imagine other people. Anyway). And that was mostly because what I imagined, off the bat, was silent, stilted, non-communicative, non-negotiated, in-the-dark missionary. And that's what I associate with vanilla sex a lot of time. That or over-the-top, fake orgasm, bro-dude/cheerleader sex. It is, evidently, also always hetero-normative.

† I know that there's not really a line, hard and fast in the sand, like this. I know almost everybody plays with power dynamics, etc. But my sweet vanilla scenes kept turning into school-girl-short-skirt-caning sex, or choked-by-the-throat-rapey sex. Anyway.

So then I started thinking about people having really sweet, communicative, quiet sex. Or sex that was really hot and steamy with roof-busting orgasms, but no pain/power/etc. I imagined ladies and I imagined guys. I imagined multiple partners set-ups. This, too is all vanilla sex.

And while it didn't turn me on, it seemed like a pretty awesome sex life. Certainly no sex life that the participants therein should be pitied for, or condescended to about. (How's that for dangling prepositional daisy chains?) º

º I'M SORRY WINSTON!

Like the poly/mono argument, I think there's a reason why we (and I'm just go to go ahead and say "we," without caveatting who I mean. The people who do this sometimes. I've included myself) associate sort of... shitty sex with non-kinky sex, and the reason why poly folks sometimes get a little... proselytizing about how amazing poly is, and how maybe, just maybe, monogamy isn't the right choice, even if you haven't figured it out yet.

Deviant choices, by definition as deviant, must be chosen. Must be talked about and negotiated, because there is no pre-understood framework for them to happen in. More mainstream choices (like "vanilla" sex and/or monogamy) don't have this (basically required) negotiatory step. Which means that nobody has to talk about it. Which means that nobody *communicates* about it. Which means... well, in partnered activities, lack of communication usually yields a less than excellent time for both partners. In other words: crappy sex.

But I don't think all non-kinky relationships are like this. I might posit that more non-kinky relationships are like this than kinky ones, but even then, who knows.

What I do know is that non-kinky sex doesn't automatically mean bad, unenlightened sex. It can mean great sex. And while I completely understand kinksters going to the internet, full of angst, and asking for advice about their "hopelessly vanilla," partners (I've been there, and felt that frustration), I don't think the implied power dynamic there is a fair one. You don't have "the one true way," while your partner is just "not sexually savvy enough too enjoy it." You're both making choices, you both have preferences, and bummer for you, looks like they don't line up.

And that's an honest bummer, but it doesn't make anyone's sexual preferences or expression any better than anybody else's.

So, I'm going to try and avoid using the word "vanilla," from now on, I think. I'm going to stick with "non-kinky," until I come up with something better (and really, non-kinky isn't even very good, with it's definition relying on deviance, and being a lack-thereof-definition and everything). Because vanilla, while delicious as a flavor (yup, I really like vanilla. Like, a lot), isn't so much working for me in a connotative vocabulary kind of way.

taking off the collar

Sir and I never did a formal collaring ceremony, but I do have a collar. We have a collar. Or rather, who's collar it is and what kind of possessive pronouns to use for it is another post altogether, so: there is a collar. He puts it on for me, takes it off for me, I wear it. I made a protocol post a while back that explains a little bit about how it functions for us as defining space, as defining play.

It's also a pretty powerful symbol, for me. It makes me feel safe, contained, acts as an undeniable marker of Sir and I's relationship, of this part of myself as strong and excellent and right, a stop gap for all of the doubts and insecurities that inevitably come; I look in the mirror, and there it is, a strip of black and red leather with a hard metal lock: quiet brain, quiet worries, quiet, you've no place here right now. Sometimes, especially recently (we've hit a bit of a rough spot; not huge, but it's been hard. Again, another post), I've been wearing the collar just to bed, with no play beforehand. And even if there were play beforehand, the result is the same: I go to bed, wrapped up in this gorgeous part of myself that feels honored, cherished, and as always, full of dirty, dirty thoughts. I go to bed feeling whole and effervescent about all sorts of things, and not just the kinky parts either, as if feeling solid in this part of my life allows a certain perspective and confidence for other parts of my life.

And them morning comes, as it inevitably does. We do the coffee shuffle and the getting dressed shuffle and somewhere in there, the collar comes off. He usually has to be the one to remind me. He holds his keys in his hand, the smallest, silver and rounded at the base, pinched between his fingers. I kneel, or bury my head in his chest, exposing the back of my neck and curling my hair out of the way in gentle fists. He unlocks, a click, and hands it back to me.

The moment the leather leaves my neck, there's a rush.*

*The language here is getting flowery, but it's not meant to overdramatize; rather, I'm grasping at something I don't fully understand, and in that grasping, I'm talking around it a lot.

The rush is dazing and a little bit sad. Sometimes I cry, and usually I get pretty spacey for a few minutes. I don't know if it's me ascribing more worth to that collar than is strictly necessary, or if it's just how much I love, really love, being in that place. Being there with Sir, it's such a relief, a long breath of stale air out, and I can swim in the fresh, contended with pretty much everything, for a while.

This is starting to sound like the rest of my life, when I'm not collared, is riddled with anxiety and hopelessness. It's also starting to sound like every moment I'm collared is perfect; neither of these things are true. But put those opposites on a spectrum, and the gradient below them is about right. It's not as absolutist as I'm putting it, but there are marked trends.

Which is maybe what's scary, in part, about taking my collar off, and how much I feel in that moment. How much my "real life," (whatever that means) is unappealing, and how much my "kink life" is better. What does that mean, that I need this thing, to be okay? What does it say that, after a while of not playing, I sometimes (not all the time, but sometimes) get antsy and anxious and weird? What does Sir think of all this, and will it scare him, and is it too intense, too serious-about-kink? Can I also be playful, bratty, and funny about my kink? And why can't I just drop the whole thing, be normal, be content during kinky times, during collared times, and during regular times.*

*like right now, for instance, sitting at work. Yes, I'm blogging at work. As a great latex-maker said on his blog: "This blog isn't safe for work, unless your work is AWESOME." And while I'm not sure my boss would exactly approve of this blog, my work is pretty awesome).

When Sir takes my collar off, there's very little I can do to keep from missing myself. Not missing as in, not-seeing, but missing as in longing-for. Like, there's this part of myself that I'm so comfortable with, when I'm collared, and I don't know how to carry that part of myself into everyday life. It's that split again, that meandering divide between a kinky self and a "regular" self that, even as I try to challenge its squirmy, icky division, pops up again and again.

There was a morning, a while back, when we just forgot to take it off. I was wearing a sweater with a high neck, and I think we just didn't notice it as we left the house. When we got in the truck, Sir caught a glance, and we laughed and remarked what would have happened if we'd both missed it until we got to work. I sat in the cab, and he leaned across the mountains of sound gear and coffee cups and unlocked me. But those moments before, I can't imagine I'd been happier about a day beginning in a long time. I don't actually remember, and I didn't know I was still wearing the collar, but there was no letting go, no missing, none of that part of me slipping away. There was no mourning. Because that's what it feels like; not as much, and I'd never make a comparison, but it feels a distant kin to that kind of grief.

Who knows. Maybe that morning was the same as always.

I've been talking to a friend at work (did I mention yet that my work is really cool?) who's an incredible craftsman and jewelry designer about making a formal collar (her work can be found here). Fancier, but also more subtle, one I could wear as a necklace and/or to balls or leather dinners or what have you.

And I'm excited about that, but I think it's also important for me to remember that I don't need the collar. That the collar, whatever collar, is a symbol. That what's actually going away is a certain unity; what I actually need to work on is keeping that partition down, or questioning the partition's existence in the first place.

So, now that I've said the same thing about five different ways, I think it's back to work with me.

Happily bruised, as always,

The Good Girl
